Our Guiding Principles

Flowing River recognizes that there are multiple complex forces impacting every choice and movement that we make in life. There is not a single method, answer or modus operandi for responding to any given challenge or situation. We feel the call for humanity to evolve and to realize our greatest potential.

Flowing River School is guided by the following principles:

  • Every child is welcome regardless of ability or disability.
  • Children are born with intrinsic biological, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social needs. The onset of a disability does not diminish these needs.
  • Every child requires support and opportunities to achieve his or her maximum potential.
  • Children are by nature social beings, born with the impulse to love and be loved. They learn about their world through play, exploration and inclusion in natural environments with family, friends and the elders in their community. Children with special needs are especially eager to participate, cooperate and contribute in ways that are meaningful. They are most able to develop their full potential when valued and respected.
  • Children retain more when they are supported to participate actively in their learning.
  • All children should have access to a quality education that encompasses a broad base of knowledge and experiences.
  • Pregnancy is a natural event; premature birth or other birth trauma is an unnatural event and the impact of that trauma upon the health and well-being of the family requires recognition and support.
  • Parents have the right and responsibility to be fully informed about the potential risks and benefits of all medical interventions and education choices.
  • Our communities play a vital role in assisting children with special needs to reach their fullest potential, both as an extended family and as the playing field for optimal development and inclusion.
